Nikos Afianes is quiet hero of Ikaria, caring for indigenous Begleri and Fokiano on the island’s high terraces, stomping grapes in vast ancient stone presses and ageing wines in pithari, local amphorae buried outside the winery. What looks primitive at first becomes something magical: subtle, elusive wines that ask you to look closer. • Pithari Fokiano ’19 is pale, weightless yet complete red, elegantly tailored with long, tea-like tannins. • Icarus Begleri ’18 is Nikos’s most expansive wine: ripe, gently oxidative and shaped by ageing in wood. Only 1850 and 520 bottles were crafted, respectively. Jérôme Binda left graphic design and Paris art world at forty-five to become farmer on Tinos, recovering ungrafted bush vines up to 200 years old across island’s hot, wind-beaten granite slopes. His wines draw sweetness from this rugged landscape: pure, magnetic fruit, chalky softness and feeling of slowly sinking into feather bed. • Vorias ’22 is Jérôme’s freshest white: light and juicy with white grapefruit, pineapple and honeyed finish. Mediterranean sun included, free of charge Clos Fantine is three siblings caring for old bush vines across Faugères’ sun-baked schist hills, leaving earth unploughed and cellar free of oak and additions. Their wines carry all generosity of the South, yet remain strangely airborne. • Valcabrieres Rosé ‘09 is singular frizzante of magical pink-pearl colour, held back for fifteen years and only now released for the first time. • Faugères ‘20 is dark yet airborne: ripe southern fruit, wild herbs and gentle sweetness carried by soft tannins and mineral spine. Gilles and Antonin Azzoni make wine in Southern Ardèche without compromise and little interest in usual natty wine-world theatre. Their bottles carry region’s anarc
